We understand that this is the first time hiring a production video company could be a bit overwhelming. You might not know what to expect, how long the process is, or whether you need to prepare anything in advance. Here is an overview of how we work, starting from the first video request to the completion of your video.
1. Having a Real Conversation First
First, we need to know what you need. Some clients understand the exact details of what they want. Others might know they need a video, but they don’t know how to get started. Both are perfectly fine.
We want to know the answers to questions such as: What is the goal of making this video? Who is the target audience? Where will the video be used? What feeling do you want the audience toWalk away with? If there are any negative feelings you want to avoid, please let us know.
This step in the process is not only to get all of the details aligned, but it is also to ensure that we do not spend a lot of time visually creating an amazing video that does not fulfill the purpose. This is also the time where we will set expectations around budget, time, and other realistic factors.
2. Planning and Pre-Production
After all the details are confirmed, we begin the planning process, which includes:
- Determining location (yours, ours, somewhere else entirely)
- Booking the filming day(s) around your availability
- Discussing what equipment we'll need (sometimes a simple setup is more effective than over-engineering)
- Reviewing who we'll need and what their roles will be
For more complex projects and shoots, we'll have a storyboard, or shot list. For the easier jobs, we will keep it more flexible and loose. Not every project needs a strict regimented system in place. In fact, a lot of times, some of the more interesting moments come to fruition when people are just temporarily rolling and not super concerned about structure.
We will also communicate with you about what we will need you to have prepared. For example, If we are filming interally in your building, we may need some areas tidied up or some specific access windows. We like to keep this easy as we know you have a lot of other work and responsibilities to manage.
3. The Shoot Day
This is the more enjoyable of all the tasks. We will arrive with plenty of more than reasonable coffee, all our gear and just get to the work. For those who have never filmed before, activities such as repositioning the lights, making continuous adjustments to the cameras, and looping the audio repeatedly might seem strange and slightly awkward, as you would be required to stand in place for such extended periods of time while filming goes on. However, even the most camera-shy people get used to it after just a little while, and If you are aware of this, we are more than capable of assisting you in getting used to it.
As for the the length of the shooting, it truly depends on the content of the shoot. We definitely will never rush through a shoot just to have it done. If something is filmed in a shoot, it will get filmed and we will be gathering all of the clips we feel we need for the content prior to the shooting and any of the re-shooting we need getting done.
4. Post-Production (The Editing Bit)
This is the part where we get to see all of the content we filmed come to life. We will keep the good quality clips we have and remove all of the clips that didn't have the quality we want or that didn't add to the flow of the video, and we keep on organizing it all for the smoothest flow. We'll be adding any of the sounds we need, setting the audio to a good level, and we will decide on any of the colors that will get edited through the video.
Depending on the details of your project, this may take anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks to complete. We'll make sure we send you the estimated time that is not just a complete guess.
5. Review and Edit
Once we have a rough draft, we will send it to you to review. This is the stage where you either confirm, “yes, that is exactly how I wanted it,” or you will let us know if you want us to make certain changes.
We include a revision or two in our price quotation. If it is a minor adjustment, like changing a word in the caption or adjusting the volume of an audio track, that is not a problem at all. Bigger changes that require a re-edit to an entire section, or the addition of new content that was not included in the original draft, may need to be discussed independently.
Being as specific as possible regarding the changes you want is of the utmost importance. For example, “make it more engaging,” is something that we may find challenging to do. “Why don’t we cut the section that starts at 1:23 and rearrange the order so that the interview is moved to the beginning instead?,” would be much easier for us to respond to.
6. Final Delivery
Once you are completely satisfied with the outcome, we will export the final version in the format of your choice. Whether you need it for YouTube, Instagram, a presentation, or your website, we will format it appropriately.
We will provide a download link for you to access the files, as the video files tend to be quite large and in most cases email will not be able to handle that. On our side we will store a copy of the files temporarily, just to be safe.
